On June 27, 2011, Fred Gardaphé sits along the railroad tracks in Melrose Park, Ill., as he revisits a place that during his childhood was a predominantly Italian, working-class neighborhood located near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Gardaphé, a 1976 graduate of the university, is a professor of Italian-American Studies at Queens College CUNY.

Part of the award is having your portrait in the Gallery of Excellence for the following year. Award photographs try to show a different side of the award winner.

Czech strongman Rene Golem Richter rips open a soft drink can with his teeth while being filmed for the television show, Stan Lee's Superhumans. Richter claims to have the strongest bite of any human and was being tested by Biological Sciences Professor Dr. Kristopher Lappin.

Olympic runner Suzy Favor Hamilton, a 1991 graduate of the university, runs through a human tunnel created during a Movin' Minds exercise class with nearly 100 middle-school students held outside of the Kohl Center on July 19, 2011. Organized in a partnership between Favor Hamilton and Precollege OPTIONS in Education Outreach and Partnerships, the weeklong program helps students to exercise their bodies and minds. Each morning's fitness class is followed by an academic class, group lunch and afternoon presentations by Hamilton and others on topics including motivation, leadership, nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyles. Favor Hamilton won nine NCAA national track championships and became the winningest female athlete in the history of the NCAA during her time as a Badger student-athlete.

|

I was asked to do an artsy cover photo of metal beams that are being designed and tested by a university professor and his students. The beams had shaped openings in them that couldn't be photographed because they are proprietary, so the only thing I could photograph was the end of the beam.

Instructor Kendra Calhoun with UAF's Cooperative Extension Service picks a ripe apple being grown inside a high tunnel at the experimental farm. Calhoun is leading a study to help rural Alaskans develop ways to grow more of their own food.

A student researcher weighs a mouse that volunteered for a behavior modification study involving economics and having to work harder (by pressing the lever more times) to get healthier, better tasting food. Less work was required to get food that had a higher fat content.
