"Sarah Thompson, horticulture graduate student, poses out on a limb of a local ginko tree. Sarah's thesis documents distinctive trees of our state which may be noted by age, size, beauty, historical value or uniqueness This particular ginko tree was planted by Mary Creswell, the first woman to receive a baccalaureate degree from our university and later become the first dean of Family & Consumer Sciences."

fruit fly

"The delicate end of a feather is used to turn over an anesthetized fruit fly being viewed under a microscope in the research lab of Jerry C.P. Yin, a professor of genetics and psychiatry. Under the microscope, researchers analyze phenotypic markers such as eye color, body type and wing shape to identify genetic changes introduced to the fly's four chromosomes."

"Optical displacement measurements are being made and accoustic standing waves are being developed."

Sarah's thesis documents distinctive trees of our state which may be noted by age, size, beauty, historical value or uniqueness. This particular ginko tree was planted by Mary Creswell, the first woman to receive a baccalaureate degree from our university and later become the first dean of Family & Consumer Sciences. (The GPS instrument in the photo helps to map out the location as well as allow input of other characteristics of the tree which can later be downloaded to a laptop.)"

 

 

Personal Vision

color infrared

1st Place (241 pts.) - "True Color Infrared" by David Campbell, Alabama State University.

"I shot this image of a church in Eutaw, Alabama. I used an infrared camera to take one image, and a normal camera to take another from the exact same position. In Photoshop I used the ir image for the background layer, and pasted the color image on top, then changed the blending mode to color. So the color is accurate, but the luminosity is infrared."

"Shane Sorensen fishes for rainbow trout on an unseasonal November day on the Eagle River near Gypsum, Colorado.
