Campus Environment

inside chapel

1st Place (268 pts.) - "Inside the Chapel" by Kristen Hines, Mississippi State University.

"Sunlight peeked through stained glass doors at the Chapel of Memories. The chapel reopened after a month of renovations. Upgrades included new paint around doorways, refinishing woodwork and new upholstery on the pews and benches. Bricks used to construct the chapel are from the university's famous Old Main dormitory, which burned in 1959, said to be one of the largest residence halls in the country."

jumping flame

3rd Place (257 pts.) - "The Jumping Flame Trick" by Rick Mickelson, University of Wisconsin @ Eau Claire.

"After a flame is blown out, wax briefly evaporates from the wick, then condenses as white smoke. A lit splint ignites the wax particles and the flame burns down the smoke trail to reignite the wick. The real trick is photographing the flame as it is burning down the smoke trail as this happens very quickly."
