"Student worker Dana Fior looks at items from the Wolzinger glass art collection housed at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History, January 29, 2008. Donor's Mel and Ruth Wolzinger's philanthropy towards the university began with the glass art donation and continued this year with a $15 million scholarship gift."

2nd Place (251 pts.) - "Window Light" by R. Marsh Starks, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "Portrait of Chris Heavey, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts."

3rd Place (246 pts.) - "Hank Virgona" by Ryan Brenizer, Columbia University Teachers College. "Portrait of artist Hank Virgona in the studio he's been working in since 1947. He was one of the subjects on a professor's research on the artistic lifestyle and healthy aging."

"Michigan's Louie Caporusso makes the first of two shots to score the game-winning goal past University of Notre Dame goalie Jordan Pearce with 20.3 seconds left in the game at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan on January 18, 2008. Michigan won 3-2."

2nd Place (250 pts.) - "Collision" by Trice Megginson, University of Wyoming. "Wyoming's Brandon Ewing collides with an Air Force defender to make his shot."

3rd Place Tie (245 pts.) - "Crunch" by Scott Galvin, Univeristy of Michigan. "Bowling Green's Kyle Page makes an open-ice check on Michigan's Travis Turnbull in the first period on December 8, 2007.

3rd Place Tie (245 pts.) - "Unstoppable Force, Meet Immovable Object" by Martin Vloet, Univeristy of Michigan. "Jevohn Shepherd makes a power move to the basket, meeting defender Marcus Landry on the way."

Campus Environment


1st Place (268 pts.) - "Inside the Chapel" by Kristen Hines, Mississippi State University. "Sunlight peeked through stained glass doors at the Chapel of Memories. The chapel reopened after a month of renovations. Upgrades included new paint around doorways, refinishing woodwork and new upholstery on the pews and benches. Bricks used to construct the chapel are from the university's famous Old Main dormitory, which burned in 1959, said to be one of the largest residence halls in the country."

2nd Place (259 pts.) - "Evening Study" by R. Marsh Starks, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "Students are framed by the windows of the Student Union during finals week."

3rd Place (246 pts.) - "Bikenblabbin'" by Tony Mastres, University of California, Santa Barbara. "Utilizing 2 primary elements of modern student life, this student chats happily as she pedals along the over 10 miles of bike paths that criss-cross our campus. Bike•en•blabbin': verb, To transport oneself via bicycle while simultaneously keeping telephonic communications with a social network."

1st Place (276 pts.) - "New Year's Eve Sparktacular" by Todd Paris, University of Alaska Fairbanks. "A New Year's Eve fireworks display erupts over the entrance to the Babula Children's Garden on the Fairbanks campus."

3rd Place (257 pts.) - "The Jumping Flame Trick" by Rick Mickelson, University of Wisconsin @ Eau Claire. "After a flame is blown out, wax briefly evaporates from the wick, then condenses as white smoke. A lit splint ignites the wax particles and the flame burns down the smoke trail to reignite the wick. The real trick is photographing the flame as it is burning down the smoke trail as this happens very quickly."
