In 1965 Reverend Reese and Dr. Martin Luther King led the first voting rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. They were met by Alabama state troopers and beaten and gassed in a confrontation now known as "Bloody Sunday". Their efforts led to the voting rights act of 1965 which was passed later that year and they returned and successfully marched from Selma to Montgomery the following year."
